The CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPOW) guides the work of the Committee, consolidating the topics it will address, the planned activities and the expected results over a four-year period. It also identifies the reports to be requested from the High Level Panel of Experts on Food Security and Nutrition (HLPE) on specific issues from a food-security and nutrition perspective, and enables the Committee to examine the financial implications of its agenda.
The 2024–2027 Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPOW 2024–2027), approved at CFS 51 in October 2023, underwent a mid-term review in 2025 to assess and adjust the remaining elements of the programme. At CFS 53, the segment on CFS Strategic Direction towards 2030 was devoted to presenting and approving this mid-term review.
During the session, Sofía Monsalve (Colombia/FIAN International), a member of the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples’ Mechanism (CSIPM), highlighted the planned high-level event on equitable governance of land scheduled for 2027, as well as the planned high-level event on artificial intelligence, digitalization and data scheduled for 2026, as among the most valuable contributions of the mid-term review.
She also reiterated the CSIPM proposal to request an assessment from the HLPE on how the UN system is addressing food security and nutrition, with the aim of strengthening the coordination role and overall work of the CFS, within the broader context of ongoing reforms of the UN and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Mechanism would also like to thank the Rapporteur for the review of the CFS Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPOW), and to highlight, among its most valuable contributions, the two planned high-level events, in particular the planned high-level event on equitable governance of land in 2027, which will follow up on the conclusions of the Second International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICARRD+20).
We would also like to note that the planned high-level event on artificial intelligence, digitalization and data represents a very important opportunity to use the CFS policy recommendations on data collection and use for food security and nutrition, which were adopted by the CFS in preparing this high-level event.
We likewise wish to underscore that 2026 will be the International Year of Rural Women, and we consider it very important for the CFS to give visibility to this theme within its communication strategy. This is also a way of following up on the CFS guidelines on gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment in the context of food security and nutrition.
We also take this opportunity to express our appreciation for the progress being made by the Rome-based agencies and by the CFS in supporting the Civil Society and Indigenous Peoples’ Mechanism (CSIPM), and we hope that the agencies will continue expanding their support to the whole Committee and also to the CSIPM in particular. As you know, this is a very important aspect of strengthening the inclusive nature of the CFS.
Finally, we would like to emphasise the importance of strengthening the policy-coordination function of the CFS. From our perspective, we have already begun to move along a very promising path, and we believe that this year and the next two years offer an opportunity to continue advancing in this function. We believe that the CFS is also well positioned to make proposals within the framework of the ongoing UN reform process and the FAO reform process.
In this regard, we would like to reiterate the proposal we made earlier this week to request from the HLPE an assessment of how the UN system is working on issues related to food security and nutrition, in order to formulate proposals that strengthen this coordination and reinforce the work of the CFS.
